HigginbothamLasting commitment is born of genuine appreciation for that which we aspire to be.  Penn Medicine’s commitment to inclusion and diversity is more than words echoing our evolving society; it is a commitment backed by actions that are the foundation of our eminence, core values, and the strategic priorities that drive how we discover, educate, and serve the world.

Penn Medicine’s five-year strategic plan 2013-2017, Shaping the Future of Medicine, defined our priorities; one of which was the creation of the Office of Inclusion and Diversity (OID).  Our efforts are aimed at supporting the many innovative programs underway, as well as exploring new opportunities to embrace diversity and broaden access to people of all ethnicities, historical traditions and economic backgrounds, genders, religions and disabilities, and respecting sexual orientation and veteran status.  I urge you to visit our site often and let us share in this commitment with you.

Broadening the Penn Medicine Community: A Profile on Vice Dean Eve Higginbotham and the Office of Inclusion and Diversity

Launched in August 2013, the Office of Inclusion and Diversity is a relatively new addition to Penn Medicine that supports, evaluates, and generates programs that promote diversity within our research community. Prior to the generation of this office, initiatives and programs to broaden access in the medical school and biomedical graduate studies, from graduate students to faculty, were handled by separate entities. There was a need for an executive-level office to direct a more cohesive and coordinated effort. The Office of Inclusion and Diversity (OID) is a product Penn Medicine’s five-year Strategic Plan, “Shaping the Future of Medicine,” which incorporates goals set by President Gutmann’s Action Plan for Faculty Diversity and Excellence. Overall, the OID represents an administrative commitment to fostering innovation at Penn through inclusion and diversity.

Excellence through Diversity Fund: Call for Proposals: May 12

Penn is pleased to call for proposals for the Excellence through Diversity Fund. The Fund, announced in the Penn Action Plan for Faculty Diversity and Excellence (Almanac September 6, 2011), will provide resources for interdisciplinary projects of Penn faculty on topics relating to equity, inclusion and diversity, with the goal of  strengthening the Penn curriculum in these areas and recognizing excellence in these important fields of inquiry. Funds will be awarded to the Schools competitively, on a matching basis, to provide needed term resources to launch new efforts or strengthen existing ones, beginning July 1, 2017. Proposals should include a description of efforts to obtain funding from other sources.
