PennMedicine is one of the premier academic medical centers in the country. The school has nearly 3000 faculty members, including nearly 700 physician-scientists and scientists who are on the tenure and research tracks. Penn currently ranks among the top 5 in NIH research funding and is number 1 in NIH research training funding. Beyond the School of Medicine, Penn has enormous research strengths in the Schools of Engineering and Applied Science, the Wharton School, and the school of Arts and Sciences, all of which play an important role in Penn MSTP.

Collaboration and free interchange of ideas is a tradition at Penn and is encouraged by multidisciplinary programs, institutes, centers and graduate programs that cross administrative boundaries. All of the Schools of the University of Pennsylvania are located on a single campus and adjacent to the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, further facilitating interdisciplinary study.

Penn’s 189 research centers and institutes bring together researchers from multiple departments, schools, and disciplines. The medical school is located next to the hospital complex, and across the street or down the block from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Wistar Institute, the Institute for Medicine and Engineering, the Engineering School, the Wharton School and the School of Arts and Sciences, all of which participate in this training program. Students are encouraged to seek faculty connections and conversations wherever it is most appropriate. Collaboration and free interchange of ideas is a tradition at Penn and is encouraged by its more than 170 interdisciplinary programs, institutes and centers that cross administrative boundaries. There are currently more than 20 organizations of this type at Penn Medicine, including the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Abramson Cancer Center, the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies, the Institute on Aging, the Mahoney Institute of Neurosciences, the Institute for Immunology, the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. All of this creates a strong backdrop for a program that includes VMD/PhD as well as MD/PhD students, and in which a sizeable fraction of the trainees do graduate work outside the biomedical laboratory sciences.

Penn faculty come with a variety of educational backgrounds and disciplines, but one of the hallmarks of the Penn Medical Center is the large number of physician-investigators with MD and MD-PhD training. These men and women do the whole range of research: basic, disease-oriented, patient-oriented and translational. All of them help to create an environment that is especially friendly for the training of future physician-investigators.
