Bio statement

A native Philadelphian, Dr. Beers received BA and MD degrees from PENN with GME training in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1993 he joined the PENN faculty as a physician scientist and received tenure in 2001. Since 2019, he has served as Faculty Moderator of United Community Clinic, a med student run clinic that has partnered with the African Family Health Organization to open a clinic site in Southwest Philadelphia to improve access to care for the West African immigrant community.

Recent global health projects

1) PSOM Faculty Moderator / Medical Director of the United Community Clinic, a med student run clinic in West/ Southwest Philadelphia that has been in existence since the mid-1990s. UCC has recently partnered with the African Family Health Organization (AFAHO) to open a student-run clinic in Grays Ferry (West Philadelphia) for the underserved African immigrant community to improve access to care focusing on hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, Tb screening, HIV screening and “women’s health issues. In addition to direct patient care, the endeavor provides education in cultural competency for trainees and a clinical site for PENN School of Nursing (SON) NP trainees. The project was recognized by the University of Pennsylvania's President's Office for Social Justice and Equity with a 2023 PENN 4 Progress Award.

2) Observer/ advisor on CGH site visit to KNUST in Kumasi, Ghana. Outcomes from that visit have included the development of an exploratory program for Mental Health training to be undertaken with PENN Psychiatry and stakeholders in Kumasi, Ghana
